The great thing about hobbies is that you can never have too many. A hobby allows you the freedom to do something you enjoy during your spare time. It provides an opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, and De-stress.
Whether you are in the market for a new hobby or not, have you considered the environmental impact of your current favorite activities? Believe it or not, there are actually a number of different eco-friendly hobby opportunities, both indoors and outdoors.
There is always room to squeeze in a new hobby, especially the kind that will minimize your carbon footprint. Think about it – you can have fun while also being a good friend to the planet. Here are some green hobby ideas to consider:
- Trail Mix it Up – Hiking and biking are both great ways to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors. This is something that the whole family can do together, and allows you to explore different trails. Depending on where you live, hiking and biking are things you can do year-round, but make sure you have all the proper equipment before hitting the trails. Bikers need a helmet, and hikers need backpacking gear.
- Get a Green Thumb – Gardening is literally a green activity. No matter what kind of climate you live in, gardening is a possibility. You just have to learn about what you can and can’t grow locally. Having a garden even allows you to grow your own organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs. It’s cheaper than buying them from the store and it feels good to eat something you played a part in creating.
- Creative with Crafting – In general, crafting is a very broad hobby category because there are so many different ways to release your artistic skills. In order to be a green craft connoisseur, all you have to do is focus on repurposing various items and maximizing your use of recycled products and materials. There is even an opportunity to make a profit on your creations if you choose to sell them to people.
- New Look on Scrapbook – Scrapbooking is a very popular hobby, but it’s certainly not the most eco-friendly activity. There are, however, some ways to make scrapbooking greener. Try creating a virtual scrapbook instead. There are plenty of software programs and downloadable applications available to make this process a viable option. You can also stick with traditional scrapbooking, but increase your usage of recycled supplies.
- Mindful Mechanic – For the hand-on folks, restoring old cars, or even building them from scratch, is an excellent green hobby. Junkyards are filled with unused auto parts just waiting to be salvaged. You can create some really cool antique-style vehicles if you can get your hands on the right parts.
Indoors or out, green hobbies give you something enjoyable to do without abusing the environment. What other hobbies can you think of that would qualify as Eco-friendly?
